BROWN BAGGING IT! by Caroline Jackson September means back to school for many. Remember when your mom packed you a bagged lunch everyday as a kid? Those were the days. Well, I can bet, if you are a New Yorker, you never graduated from bagged lunches, even if your mom is not the one preparing them for you anymore. Most of us brown bag it every day, so this month, we feature a few places that offer some of the tastiest lunches togo. 21 Bedford Street Our own Jason Denton, co-owner of Lupa, owns this little jewel, where he offers panini’s so true and tasty, it is popular with everyone. Our favorites this month: Prosciutto, bel paese and sweet onion Sweet coppa, hot peppers and rucola And, Artichoke, fennel and fontina Greenwich Street Many of us escape to this simple, homey, and affordable restaurant for their authentic mexican ingredients and traditional methods of preperations. You would be hard-pressed to find a tastier lunch than their Tacquitos el Pastor. Mini-tacos made with a corn tortilla stuffed with a grilled pineapple and pork mixture which is rolled, deep-fried and then served with their own green salsa. Sixth Avenue at 8th Street (multiple locations) Who can resist the experience of eating a hot dog on the corner in New York City? I haven’t quite figured out if it is the hot dogs themselves, or something about the air in New York City, but we think Gray’s consistency speaks for itself. And even though Gray’s is not on every corner, the service is just as fast, if not faster than most street vendors, making it worth the trip. Babbo co-owner, Joe Bastianich, says he eats here twice a week at least. “It’s cheap, and even if it cost three times more, I would still frequent it.” |
